Meet Gavin

Kia ora, I'm Gavin Wu.

Gavin Wu for UCS First-Year Representative

My three priorities

Monthly social events, better dining hall food, and a central place to find club activities and openings throughout the year. Explore the proposals, share your suggestions and follow the progress.

01

Proposal

Monthly social events

I would work toward a monthly programme of socials, student performances and DJ nights, starting with a proposed Main Green pilot. I would approach CCB, student DJs and clubs, prepare a budget, seek approvals and gather feedback before expanding.

First step: Gather event ideas and request a planning discussion with CCB.

Clubs and activities

Club openings, events and activities

Open meetings, workshops, performances, socials, volunteering and current recruitment — throughout the year, not just in September.

The goal is to make opportunities visible beyond September. Listings come from participating clubs and are reviewed before they appear — not every club has joined, and an empty result doesn’t mean nothing is happening. Clubs set their own application and selection rules; this page can’t change them or guarantee a place.

No club listings yet. Clubs are being invited to contribute. If you help run one, add your open events and current recruitment status.

Proposals and confirmed events

Ideas and planning are kept apart from confirmed events. Nothing is announced as happening until it is approved.

Confirmed upcoming events

No confirmed events yet. An event appears here only once its date, venue and approvals are in place. Until then, everything is a proposal.

Can the Ratty stay open past 7:30 on weeknights?

A lot of us have labs or rehearsals that run until 7 or later and by the time we get to the Ratty half the stations are closed and they're wiping down tables. Even 8:30 would make a huge difference. Is this something dining has been asked about before?

Andrews line at 12:15 is 25+ minutes

Timed it three days in a row this week. If you have a 1pm class you basically cannot eat at Andrews. Could they open a second register or do a grab-and-go line for people who just want the pre-made stuff?

Half the dryers in Keeney don't actually dry

Archibald-Bronson basement: 3 of the 6 dryers run but come out damp after a full cycle. People are running things twice and the whole room backs up on Sunday. Who do we even report this to? The app says "working."

SafeRide wait times after 11pm are 40+ minutes

Tried to get a ride from the SciLi back to Perkins on Thursday around 11:30 and the app showed 40 minutes. Ended up walking. Perkins is far enough that this actually matters. Is there any plan to add a second vehicle on weeknights?

Brown-Secure keeps dropping in Emery-Woolley

It's fine in the lounge but in the rooms on the 3rd floor my laptop disconnects every 10-15 minutes. Two other people on my floor have the same issue. Eduroam is worse. Anyone found a fix or should we all file tickets?

Three-week wait for a first CAPS appointment

Called last week and the first available intake was three weeks out. I know there are drop-in hours but it's not the same as actually having someone. Is UCS talking to CAPS about this at all? Genuinely asking, not trying to be dramatic.

Why is V-Dub closed on weekends when Pembroke is full of first-years?

Everyone in Andrews/Metcalf/Miller has to trek to the Ratty on Saturday and Sunday. Even a brunch-only opening on Sunday would be worth it. Is this a staffing thing or a budget thing?

Points run out way too fast

On the 20 meal plan with points and I'm already at half after three weeks. A coffee and a bagel at the Blue Room is like 9 points. Either prices need to come down or the plans need more points. Would love to see actual numbers on this.

My Meiklejohn has responded to one email since orientation

Not trying to throw anyone under the bus but I have real questions about concentration requirements and I've gotten one reply since August. Is there a way to get reassigned or at least talk to someone in the advising office directly?

Nelson is unusable between 4 and 7pm

Every rack taken, 20 minute waits for a bench. Could there be a first-year hours block or at least a live occupancy counter on the website so we know when to go?

Crossing Thayer at Waterman is scary at night

Cars come around that corner fast and the signal timing gives you about 8 seconds. A friend almost got hit last weekend. Has anyone raised this with the city?

Vegetarian options at the Ratty are basically rice and the salad bar

The Roots station is great when it exists but half the time it's the same tofu stir fry. Andrews does this better. Can we get a real rotation posted somewhere so we can plan?

Is there a printing quota and what is it?

I've printed maybe 40 pages of readings and now I'm paranoid I'm about to hit a limit. The IT page is unclear. Also the SciLi printers jam every other job.

Blue Room prices vs Thayer

A sandwich at the Blue Room is 11 points. Same thing on Thayer is $8 cash. Why are we paying more in the place that's supposed to be for us?

SciLi floors 8-12 need more outlets

Half the desks on the quiet floors have no working outlet. People bring power strips from home. Feels like an easy fix compared to most stuff on here.

Signed up for 12 clubs at the fair, heard from 3

Is this normal? I put my email on a bunch of lists at the activities fair and most never followed up. A central place with actual meeting times would help so much. Is that what the clubs page here is meant to be?

Late-night options after Jo's closes

After 2am on weekends there is literally nothing on campus. Not asking for a full menu but a vending situation with real food, or Jo's open until 3 on Fri/Sat, would go a long way.

RIPTA with the Brown ID: which routes actually work

Tapped my ID on the R-Line and it worked, tapped it on the 1 and the driver said no. Is there an official list? Would be great to have this on a page somewhere for first-years.

More low-key first-year events, please

Orientation had a lot of loud stuff. Would love smaller things: board games, a movie on the Main Green, a study break with food. The monthly social events proposal sounds good if they're actually varied.

Perkins deserves a morning shuttle

It's a 15 minute walk to main campus and in the winter that's going to be brutal. Even one shuttle loop between 8 and 10am would help. Do other far dorms get this?

  • What I keep hearing

Three things students told me, and the goal each one became.

    1. 01·Monthly social events

“I still haven't found my people after orientation.”

Is there anything where you can comfortably show up alone?

A low-pressure gathering every month, so there is always a next one.

      See the events plan
    2. 02·Club activities beyond September

“I keep finding out about opportunities after the deadline.”

Why is there no single place to see what is open right now?

One page for club openings, auditions and deadlines, all year round.

      Browse clubs and openings
    3. 03·One place for what matters

“I get so many emails, I don't know what's important.”

Could the important things live somewhere you would actually look?

Events, openings and deadlines you can scan in a minute, instead of digging through your inbox.

Heard something different? Add it to the forum and it goes on the record.

    02

    Proposal

    Better dining hall food

Tell us what worked and what needs changing at each dining location. I would turn ratings and specific suggestions into monthly reports for the Dining Council and Dining Services, request a response and publish the follow-up.

First step: Collect location-specific feedback and prepare the first report.

Rate your dining experienceRead feedback and reports

    03

    Proposal

    Club activities beyond September

I would invite clubs to publish open events, activities, application deadlines and current recruitment status in one searchable place. Find opportunities throughout the year, including activities that do not require an application.

First step: Invite participating clubs to contribute current listings.

Browse clubs and eventsSubmit a club listing
